My review of White Rabbit Megaways
My experience
I have a soft spot for White Rabbit, because for me it's where the modern Megaways era really clicked. Bonanza got there first, but White Rabbit added the Extending Reels idea and turned a clever mechanic into a proper feature chase — and that's exactly the kind of game design that keeps a professional coming back to study it.
The base game is moody and patient. You spin a 5-reel grid where each reel can show anywhere from 2 to 7 symbols, so the number of ways to win changes every single spin. When all five reels stack 7 symbols high you get 16,807 ways, which already feels generous. The standout base-game moment is the Caterpillar: it sits on top of the reels and, at random, wakes up to blow smoke rings that transform 1 to 4 symbols into Bonus Wilds carrying x2 or x3 multipliers. When two or three of those land together on a connected win, the base game can suddenly punch well above its weight.
But the soul of White Rabbit is the free spins. Three White Rabbit scatters award 15 spins, and from that point the reels start to grow. Every Cupcake symbol that lands permanently extends its reel by one row, and those extensions carry across the whole feature. Watch a couple of reels climb toward their 12-row maximum and the ways-to-win counter starts spinning into numbers that feel absurd — the famous 248,832 ways when every reel is fully extended. Once a reel is maxed, any further Cupcake on it gives you extra free spins instead, so a hot run can snowball into a long, tall, high-ways board where one good connecting line pays serious money.
Let me be honest as a gambler, not a marketer: the base game can run cold for a long time, and a fully extended board is the exception, not the norm. Most sessions are about surviving the dry spells until you trigger the feature, then hoping the Cupcakes show up early. White Rabbit was also the first BTG slot to ship the Feature Drop (bonus buy), and I understand the temptation — but buying features burns bankroll fast and is banned in plenty of markets. I played most of my sessions near the bottom of the bet range and treated every free-spins trigger as a bonus, never an entitlement. Open the demo first, learn how the Cupcakes and Caterpillar behave, and respect the variance.
Strengths
- Landmark Megaways design — the Extending Reels system is still one of the most satisfying feature chases in slots
- Excellent 97.24% default RTP for a Megaways game, with a higher 97.77% Feature Drop version where offered
- Up to 248,832 ways to win once all reels reach their full 12-row height in free spins
- Caterpillar Bonus Wilds (x2/x3) keep the base game alive and can spark surprise wins
- Gorgeous Alice in Wonderland presentation with a memorable soundtrack that holds up years later
- Was the first BTG game with a Feature Drop (bonus buy) for players who want a faster route to the feature
- Flawless HTML5 build that runs identically on mobile and desktop
Weaknesses
- Medium-high volatility — the base game can run cold for long stretches, so budget accordingly
- A fully extended 248,832-way board is rare; most free-spins rounds end far smaller
- 13,000x ceiling is generous but realistically a long-shot, not a target
- Operators may run a lower RTP or cap the max bet — always check the in-game info screen
- The Feature Drop is banned in several regulated markets and can drain a bankroll quickly when used
Who is White Rabbit Megaways for?
White Rabbit Megaways is for players who love a slow-building, high-ceiling feature chase rather than constant small wins. If you enjoy the Megaways format and want to play the game that helped define it, this is essential — and it sits naturally alongside other Big Time Gaming-style variance machines. Fans of Nolimit City's expanding-grid slots like San Quentin xWays or Fire in the Hole 3 (both reviewed here) will recognise the same patient-but-explosive rhythm. It also suits anyone who appreciates strong theming: the Alice in Wonderland presentation is gorgeous and the soundtrack is genuinely good. Beginners aren't shut out — the core idea (more symbols equals more ways to win) is intuitive — but understand up front that the base game is moody and most of the value lives in free spins. If you'd rather have frequent, gentler payouts, my reviews of Big Bass Bonanza and The Dog House cover far calmer rides. Whoever you are: set a budget before you spin, never chase losses, and remember the house edge never sleeps.
How White Rabbit Megaways works
White Rabbit Megaways is a 5-reel Megaways slot where each reel displays a variable 2 to 7 symbols, so the number of ways to win changes on every spin (up to 16,807). On top of that core engine sit four features that define the game: the Caterpillar Bonus Wilds in the base game, the scatter-triggered free spins, the Extending Reels (Cupcakes) that grow the grid toward 248,832 ways, and the optional Feature Drop. Here is each one, in detail.
Megaways Engine
The base of the game. Across the 5 reels, each reel independently shows between 2 and 7 symbols on every spin. The total ways to win is the symbols on reel one multiplied by reel two, and so on — so when all five reels land their maximum 7 symbols you get 7×7×7×7×7 = 16,807 ways. Wins are paid left to right on matching symbols in any position on consecutive reels, regardless of where they sit on the reel.
Caterpillar Bonus Wilds
The signature base-game feature. The sleeping Caterpillar above the reels can wake at random on any spin and blow smoke rings that transform 1 to 4 symbols into Bonus Wilds. Each Bonus Wild substitutes for regular symbols and carries an x2 or x3 multiplier. When several land on the same connecting win the multipliers combine, which is how the base game produces its bigger, surprise payouts.
Free Spins
The main event, triggered by landing 3 White Rabbit scatter symbols on a single spin. This awards 15 free spins. The free-spins round is where the Extending Reels mechanic comes alive — and crucially, every reel extension you earn is locked in for the rest of the feature rather than resetting each spin, so the grid only ever grows taller as the round goes on.
Extending Reels (Cupcakes)
The heart of White Rabbit. During free spins, every Cupcake symbol that lands permanently adds one extra row to that reel for the remainder of the feature. Reels can grow from their starting height all the way up to 12 rows. With all five reels fully extended to 12 rows you reach the famous 248,832 ways to win. Once a reel is already at its 12-row maximum, any further Cupcake landing on it awards additional free spins (typically 3 to 12) instead of more height — so a Cupcake-heavy run can keep the feature going and climbing.
Feature Drop (Bonus Buy)
White Rabbit was the first Big Time Gaming slot to include a bonus buy, branded the Feature Drop. Where regulations allow, you can buy your way straight into the free-spins round for 100x your stake. Cleverly, hat symbols you collect during normal play gradually reduce that purchase price over time. The Feature Drop is not available in many regulated markets (including the UK), and buying features is a fast way to spend a bankroll, so treat it with caution.
White Rabbit Megaways FAQ
Where to play White Rabbit Megaways
White Rabbit Megaways is a genuine landmark. It's the game where Big Time Gaming took the Megaways engine and bolted on the Extending Reels idea, turning a clever counting mechanic into one of the most addictive feature chases in slots. The 97.24% default RTP is superb for the genre, the Caterpillar keeps the base game from ever feeling fully dead, and the free-spins dream of a fully extended 248,832-way board is still a thrill years after release. The Alice in Wonderland theme and soundtrack are top-tier, and as the first BTG game with a Feature Drop it has a place in slots history. But let me be clear: this is a medium-high variance game, the base game runs cold, and that gigantic extended board is the exception, not the rule — 13,000x is a number you may chase for a long time and never see. Play a free demo first, size your bets like a professional, and treat every free-spins trigger as a gift rather than a plan. 8.7/10: a brilliant, important, beautifully made slot that still earns its reputation — and still demands discipline. 18+, play responsibly.
